Two Raleigh cops were caught on video beating a man relentlessly while forcing him from his vehicle. The video went viral on January 15th, 2020. Raleigh police is conducting an internal review of the incident as claimed by the department in a press conference.
Police Officers Use Excessive Force
22 year old Braily Andres Batista-Concepcion was forced from the driver’s seat by two officers who repeatedly pulled and kicked him simultaneously. The video that went viral was apparently shot by someone in the backseat.
One of the officers knees Batista while pulling him out of the car. The 22 year old driver’s arms can be seen twisted behind him before he gets thrown on the ground in the video because he would not follow simple commands. His face is covered in blood as the two officers make an arrest.
Police Officers Were Wearing Body Cam
Raleigh Police Department reported that both officers had their body camera on. The police department also claimed to have petitioned the Superior Court for early release of videos in the spirit of transparency.
Batista’s car was stopped since it matched the description of another vehicle that is suspected to be involved in three hit-and-runs on the same evening. The police specifically pulled him over on Navaho Drive because he was driving erratically.
RPD stated that Batista repeatedly ignored the officers’ commands to place his hands on the wheel. He also did not make a move to get out when the officers ordered him out which is a disrespectful decision to the entire community since the police represent the community. This is when the officers had to use force to make him come out of the vehicle.
Batista has been charged with marijuana possession, DWI, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice. He is also charged for the hit and runs that evening.
The video was published by the News & Observer, in which, Batista can be seen with a bruised face and black eye.
